Getting the Most out of Your Shellac Nails

For several years now, the Shellac Manicure has been a popular choice for many women. If you’re someone who regularly gets her nails done at a salon, then chances are that you’ve at least tried this nail care option. After all, it offers a number of important advantages over some of the older nail polish treatments, including the fact that it provides a strong, relatively long-lasting color finish for your nails. What many people often neglect, however, is that you have to properly care for your nails if you want to get the most out of your manicure.

Shellac polish is durable, but if you really want to make it last you’ll have to work to protect your nails. They will easily withstand the daily rigors of typing on a keyboard and similar tasks. Still, daily chores and activities can take their toll, and if you’re neglecting your nails then the shellac may not last as long as it should. You can better ensure that your shellac lasts for two weeks or even longer by simply taking a few steps to protect your hands and nails. Here are some of the easiest ways to do just that:

Remember to wear gloves when you’re handling household cleaners, washing dishes, or working in the garden. That will help to protect both your skin and nails from suffering the wear and tear that those chores can inflict.
Keep in mind that pool chlorine and even the sun’s rays can affect your nail color and the integrity of the shellac. You can avoid any serious impact by thoroughly washing the chlorine off when you leave the pool, and using sun screen while you’re outdoors.
Use top coat to provide an added protection for your shellac. That will not only extend the longevity of your shellac treatment, but will help to keep your nails glossy and limit the dulling effect that can occur over time.
Hand cream and cuticle oils should be used on a daily basis. A quality moisturizer can be used throughout the day as necessary to keep skin and nails healthy. Cuticle oil can be applied at night to protect the nails and prevent the flaking that can sometimes occur when they become overly dry.
Don’t chip at the polish, as that can weaken the shellac treatment and hasten the time between applications.

If you follow these simple, common sense care tips, you can expect your shellac to last for as long as two to three weeks. Somewhere around that time, you’ll notice that there is an unpolished area forming around the cuticles – indicating that your natural nails have grown longer. That is typically the point at which you should schedule another appointment to have your nails redone.

We also recognize that the shellac services we provide are only part of what our clients need to ensure that their nails continue to look their best; proper home care is equally important to ensuring that you get the most out of your nail treatment.
